Medical Waste Disposal in Athens, GA

EnviCare medical waste service map highlighting statewide Georgia coverage, with the Cartersville CareCenter and CareExchange locations across the Southeast

Statewide Georgia pickup for Athens-Clarke County clinics, labs and Northeast Georgia.

One provider across 7 states and North Florida.

Athens is a college town, and it's also the medical center for much of Northeast Georgia. Two hospital systems, a new medical school, research and clinical labs, and a dense network of practices make Athens-Clarke County one of the state's busiest healthcare markets outside Atlanta. EnviCare serves it from our Cartersville CareCenter, about 110 miles west, as part of statewide Georgia routes that also reach the coast, the mountains and South Georgia.

Hospitals, Labs and a New Medical School

  • Piedmont Athens Regional on Prince Avenue is a regional referral hospital with a Level II trauma center. It serves 17 counties across Northeast Georgia.

  • St. Mary's Hospital on Baxter Street is part of Trinity Health. Its St. Mary's Health Care System also runs hospitals in Lavonia and Greensboro.

  • The University of Georgia School of Medicine welcomed its first independent class in July 2026, adding to the research activity already happening across campus.

Add the specialty practices, surgery and imaging centers, dental and orthodontic offices, veterinary hospitals, clinical and research labs, pharmacies and senior living communities from downtown to Watkinsville and Jefferson, and you have a lot of facilities that need dependable regulated waste pickup.

Laboratory and Research Waste

Georgia's biomedical waste rule doesn't only cover clinics. It explicitly includes cultures and stocks of infectious agents from medical, research and industrial laboratories, along with culture dishes and the devices used to handle them. Labs also generate sharps, contaminated PPE and broken glass that need puncture-resistant containers.

EnviCare picks up lab-generated regulated medical waste and sharps on the same schedule as your other waste. That includes clinical reference labs, research groups, biotech startups and physician office labs. If you aren't sure whether a waste stream qualifies, our Client Care Team can help you sort it out before your first pickup.

Close to Home Base

At roughly two hours from Cartersville, Athens is one of the closer regional markets to our plant. A Note on Georgia Compliance

Under Georgia EPD Rule 391-3-4-.15, biomedical waste must be segregated at the source, kept in properly marked red or orange containers or containers bearing the biohazard symbol, and released only to an authorized collector. The rule names laboratories and research facilities directly. Read more on our Georgia medical waste services page. (This is general information, not legal advice.)

Athens Medical Waste FAQ

Do you handle lab cultures and research waste?

Yes, as regulated medical waste. Cultures, stocks, culture dishes and contaminated lab supplies go into biohazard containers for scheduled pickup. Sharps and broken glass go into puncture-resistant sharps containers.

Do you serve veterinary practices in the Athens area?

Yes. Veterinary offices are named in Georgia's rule, and we serve small-animal, mixed and specialty veterinary practices with the same pickup, sharps and pharmaceutical services we provide to human healthcare.

Can we drop off hard drives instead of scheduling a pickup?

Yes. Drop-off at our Cartersville CareCenter runs 8 AM to 5 PM. Hard drives are destroyed by hole-punching and documented with a certificate of destruction.

Is your shredding certified?

EnviCare is NAID AAA certified for paper document destruction, and every job comes with a certificate of destruction.
