Georgia is home for EnviCare. We're headquartered in Cartersville, and our trucks run scheduled medical waste routes across the whole state: metro Atlanta, the mountains of North Georgia, the Savannah and Brunswick coast, and the farm country around Albany and Valdosta. Our fleet runs from route trucks to tractor trailers, sized for anything from a dental office to a hospital system or a full records cleanout. Our routes also cover six more Southeast states and North Florida, so multi-state groups can keep every location with one provider.

Georgia Medical Waste Compliance
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), part of the Department of Natural Resources, regulates biomedical waste in Georgia. The key rule is Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 391-3-4-.15, "Biomedical Waste," which sits within Georgia's Rules for Solid Waste Management (Chapter 391-3-4) and is authorized by the Georgia Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Act (O.C.G.A. 12-8-20 et seq.).
Here's what the rule means for a typical Georgia generator:
-
Biomedical waste is defined broadly. It covers pathological and biological waste, cultures, contaminated animal waste, sharps, chemotherapy waste and contaminated equipment. The rule names clinics, dental, veterinary and physicians' offices, labs, nursing homes and funeral homes, among others.
-
Segregate at the point of origin. Biomedical waste must be kept separate from regular trash. Sharps go in leakproof, rigid, puncture-resistant containers, and bags and containers must be red or orange or marked with the biohazard symbol.
-
Small generators are not fully exempt. Facilities generating less than 100 pounds a month are partially exempt, but they still must meet the rule's core containment, segregation, labeling and disposal requirements.
-
Transfer custody only to an authorized collector. Under Rule 391-3-4-.15(5), a generator may hand biomedical waste only to a collector operating under EPD's rules, and the waste may go only to a properly permitted storage or treatment facility.
EnviCare handles the paperwork side of this. Each pickup produces an electronic manifest, so you have a clear chain of custody when an EPD inspector, an OSHA inspector or your own compliance officer asks for it.
Keeping your written plans and training current
Georgia generators also answer to federal OSHA and HIPAA rules, and inspectors usually start with four documents. EnviCare's compliance platform covers all four:
-
HIPAA (45 CFR Parts 160 and 164): an annual risk analysis, documented privacy and security policies, and automated employee training with digitally signed acknowledgements.
-
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens: annual employee training, an updated Exposure Control Plan and employee Hepatitis B documentation.
-
OSHA Hazard Communication: employee training and a written HazCom plan.
-
Biomedical waste plan: state-compliant handling plans for biomedical waste, in line with Rule 391-3-4-.15.
The platform generates updated, site-specific written plans in minutes and tracks all employee training and required acknowledgements in one dashboard. Clients also get access to professional "Fine Protection" and mock inspections.
This section is a summary, not legal advice. Facilities should confirm their obligations with Georgia EPD.
How Medical Waste Pickup Works
-
Call or request a quote. Tell our Client Care Team what you generate, roughly how much, and how many locations you have.
-
Get the right containers. We set you up with RMW boxes or reusable containers, reusable or disposable sharps containers, pharmaceutical and trace-chemo containers, and shredding bins as needed.
-
Choose your schedule. Pickups can be weekly, every other week, monthly or on call, depending on volume. You'll get a 24-hour email reminder before every pickup.
-
We pick up and document. Our drivers collect your sealed containers and record each pickup on an electronic manifest. High-volume sites and large cleanouts get tractor-trailer capacity.
-
Treatment and records. Your waste goes to a permitted treatment facility. Your manifests and certificates of destruction are available whenever you need them.

Georgia Medical Waste FAQ
Who regulates medical waste in Georgia? The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) does, under Rule 391-3-4-.15 of the Rules for Solid Waste Management. OSHA covers workplace exposure to bloodborne pathogens, and the U.S. DOT regulates how medical waste is packaged and transported.
My clinic generates less than 100 pounds a month. Do the rules still apply? Yes. Georgia gives facilities under 100 pounds per month a partial exemption, but they still must segregate, contain and label biomedical waste properly and transfer it only to an authorized collector. We size pickup frequency to your volume.
Can you handle sharps, pharmaceuticals, shredding and records on one account? Yes. Georgia clients can bundle regulated medical waste, sharps (reusable or disposable containers), pharmaceutical waste, NAID AAA certified shredding and secure records storage with EnviCare.
Is your document destruction certified? Yes. EnviCare is NAID AAA certified. Every shredding job comes with a certificate of destruction. We also handle large-volume paper purges and cleanouts.
Do you serve rural Georgia, or only metro Atlanta? We serve the whole state, from the North Georgia mountains to the coast and South Georgia.
