Louisiana Medical Waste Compliance
Louisiana regulates medical waste as potentially infectious biomedical waste under the State Sanitary Code, LAC Title 51, Part XXVII, enforced by the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Office of Public Health. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) regulates solid waste facilities, biomedical waste incinerators and hazardous waste.
Here's what the rules mean for a typical Louisiana facility:
-
Large and small generators. A facility generating 25 kilograms (55 pounds) or more of biomedical waste a month, not counting sharps, or 5 kilograms (11 pounds) or more of sharps, is a large generator (LAC 51:XXVII.301). Smaller facilities still follow the packaging, labeling and storage rules (LAC 51:XXVII.501).
-
Packaging. Sharps go in break-resistant, rigid, puncture-resistant containers that are tightly closed. Bags and other containers must be moisture-proof, strong enough not to rip or burst, and securely closed. Waste stored outside needs a second, watertight, rodent- and insect-proof container (LAC 51:XXVII.303.B).
-
Labels. Every package must say "Potentially Infectious Biomedical Waste," "Medical Waste" or "Infectious Waste," and untreated waste leaving your premises must bear the generator's or transporter's name and address (LAC 51:XXVII.303.G).
-
Storage. Store waste securely, protected from theft, people, animals, rain and wind, with no odors or pests. Compactors can't be used (LAC 51:XXVII.901).
-
Written contract and permitted transporter. Arrangements between a generator and transporter must be in a written contract, and anyone hauling biomedical waste for another generator needs an LDH transporter permit (LAC 51:XXVII.701.C and G).
-
Hazardous pharmaceuticals. LDEQ has adopted EPA's hazardous waste pharmaceuticals rule (LAC 33:V.1205), including the ban on flushing them down the drain.
EnviCare holds LDH Medical Waste Transporter Permit TRN-GA001 and appears on the Office of Public Health's published list of permitted medical waste transporters. EnviCare's service agreement serves as the written generator-transporter contract Louisiana requires (LAC 51:XXVII.701.C). Louisiana allows out-of-state treatment at a fully compliant facility (LAC 51:XXVII.701.E). We haul Louisiana waste to a permitted treatment facility in Georgia, and every pickup comes with an electronic manifest that lists the package count, the treatment facility's name, address and phone number, and the shipment date.
OSHA and HIPAA Training and Plans
On top of state rules, inspectors usually ask for four documents first. EnviCare's compliance platform covers HIPAA risk analysis and policies, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training and an Exposure Control Plan, OSHA Hazard Communication training and a written plan, and a medical waste plan, all tracked in one dashboard.
This section is a summary, not legal advice. Confirm your facility's obligations with LDH and LDEQ.
How Medical Waste Pickup Works
-
Call or request a quote. Tell our Client Care Team what you generate, how much, and where.
-
Get the right containers. We set you up with biohazard boxes or reusable containers, reusable or disposable sharps containers, pharmaceutical and trace-chemo containers, and shredding bins as needed.
-
Choose your schedule. Weekly, every other week, monthly or on call, set to your volume.
-
We pick up and document. Our drivers collect your sealed containers, and you get an electronic manifest after every pickup. High-volume sites and large cleanouts get tractor-trailer capacity.
-
Treatment and records. Your waste goes to a permitted treatment facility in Georgia, and your manifests and certificates of destruction are available whenever you need them.

Louisiana Medical Waste FAQ
Do you serve all of Louisiana?
Yes. EnviCare serves Louisiana statewide, from Shreveport and Monroe through Alexandria, Lake Charles, Lafayette and Baton Rouge to New Orleans and Houma. We also have local CareExchanges in Shreveport and New Orleans.
Who regulates medical waste in Louisiana?
The Louisiana Department of Health's Office of Public Health regulates potentially infectious biomedical waste under the State Sanitary Code, LAC Title 51, Part XXVII. LDEQ regulates waste facilities, incinerators and hazardous waste. OSHA and the U.S. Department of Transportation also have requirements.
Does Louisiana require medical waste transporters to be permitted?
Yes. Anyone hauling biomedical waste for another generator needs an LDH transporter permit, and transport vehicles must display a current LDH permit decal. EnviCare holds permit TRN-GA001 and is on LDH's published transporter list.
Do we need a contract with our transporter?
Yes. Louisiana requires the arrangement between a generator and its transporter to be a written contract in which both parties commit to following the Sanitary Code.
How long can we store medical waste before pickup?
The Sanitary Code sets no fixed number of days. Waste must be stored securely, protected from weather, people and pests, and kept from creating odors. We set your pickup schedule to keep storage short.
We have locations in Mississippi or Alabama too. Can one company handle all of them?
Yes. EnviCare serves Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina statewide, plus North Florida, so multi-state groups can use one provider.
