North Florida is a long, narrow market, stretching more than 350 miles along I-10 from Pensacola to Jacksonville. EnviCare serves that whole corridor. We're a Southeast medical waste company headquartered at our Cartersville CareCenter in Georgia, and our North Florida service is supported by our Thomasville CareExchange, just over the Georgia line from Tallahassee. Our fleet runs from route trucks to tractor trailers, sized for anything from a single dental office to a hospital department or a full records cleanout.
Our Florida coverage is North Florida only, from Pensacola to Jacksonville. In the Jacksonville area, coverage reaches south to Orange Park. St. Augustine and St. Johns County are not included, and neither are Gainesville, Ocala, Central Florida or South Florida.

Florida Biomedical Waste Compliance
Florida regulates medical waste as biomedical waste. The Florida Department of Health (DOH) regulates the packaging, transport, storage and treatment of biomedical waste under section 381.0098, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 64E-16, Florida Administrative Code. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulates biomedical waste incineration and disposal. Local county health departments administer the program and carry out inspections.
Here's what Chapter 64E-16 means for a typical North Florida generator:
-
Generator permits. Facilities that generate biomedical waste need an annual DOH permit, which expires September 30. Generators that produce less than 25 pounds in every 30-day period are exempt from the permit and fee requirements, but not from the rest of the rule.
-
Use a registered transporter. A generator may not arrange transport of biomedical waste with anyone who isn't registered with DOH as a biomedical waste transporter.
-
Package it at the point of origin. Non-sharps biomedical waste goes into impermeable red bags that meet the rule's strength standards. Sharps go into rigid, leak- and puncture-resistant sharps containers, single-use or reusable, sealed when full. Packages must show the biohazard symbol and a phrase such as "Biomedical Waste" or "Biohazardous Waste."
-
Label with the generator's name and address. Bags and sharps containers must carry the generator's name and address, unless the transporter provides generator-specific labels such as bar codes.
-
30-day storage limit. Biomedical waste can't be stored at the generating facility for more than 30 days. The clock starts when the first non-sharps item goes into a red bag, or when a sharps-only container is sealed.
-
Receipt of pickup. Registered transporters must give the generator a receipt for each pickup.
EnviCare is a registered Florida biomedical waste transporter (Florida DOH Registration No. 7958, permit 24-64-2638413). You get an electronic manifest emailed as a printable PDF after every pickup, which covers Florida's receipt-per-pickup requirement. We also set your pickup frequency to keep you inside the 30-day storage limit.
Written Operating Plan and Training
Chapter 64E-16 requires every biomedical waste facility to keep a written operating plan. The plan must cover personnel training, procedures for segregating, labeling, packaging, transporting, storing and treating biomedical waste, spill decontamination, and an emergency contingency plan. Staff who handle biomedical waste must be trained before they start those duties and complete refresher training every year, and biomedical waste records must be kept for three years.
For federal OSHA and HIPAA requirements, EnviCare's compliance platform covers HIPAA risk analysis and policies, Bloodborne Pathogens training and an Exposure Control Plan, and Hazard Communication training and a written plan, all tracked in one dashboard.
This section is a summary, not legal advice. Confirm your facility's obligations with the Florida Department of Health and your county health department.
How Medical Waste Pickup Works
-
Call or request a quote. Tell our Client Care Team what you generate, roughly how much, and where your locations are.
-
Get the right containers. We set you up with biohazard boxes or reusable containers, reusable or disposable sharps containers, pharmaceutical and trace-chemo containers, and shredding bins as needed.
-
Choose your schedule. Weekly, every other week, monthly or on call, set to your volume and Florida's 30-day storage limit.
-
We pick up and document. Our drivers collect your sealed containers, and you get an electronic manifest emailed as a printable PDF after every pickup. High-volume sites and large cleanouts get tractor-trailer capacity.
-
Treatment and records. Your waste goes to a permitted treatment facility, and your manifests and certificates of destruction are available whenever you need them.

North Florida Medical Waste FAQ
Do you serve all of Florida?
No. EnviCare serves North Florida only: the Panhandle, Tallahassee and the Big Bend, Lake City, and the Jacksonville area south to Orange Park. St. Augustine, St. Johns County, Gainesville, Ocala, Central Florida and South Florida are outside our service area.
Who regulates medical waste in Florida?
The Florida Department of Health, under section 381.0098, F.S., and Chapter 64E-16, F.A.C., working through county health departments. The Department of Environmental Protection regulates incineration and disposal. Generators must use a DOH-registered transporter, and EnviCare is a registered Florida biomedical waste transporter (Florida DOH Registration No. 7958, permit 24-64-2638413).
Does my office need a Florida biomedical waste generator permit?
Generators need an annual DOH permit unless they produce less than 25 pounds of biomedical waste in every 30-day period. Exempt generators still must follow the rest of Chapter 64E-16, including packaging, labeling, storage limits and using a registered transporter.
How long can we store biomedical waste before pickup?
No more than 30 days at the generating facility, starting when the first non-sharps item goes into a red bag or a sharps-only container is sealed. We schedule pickup to stay within that limit.
Does Florida require biomedical waste training?
Yes. Staff who handle biomedical waste must be trained before taking on those duties and retrained every year, with training documented in your written operating plan.
We have locations in Georgia or Alabama too. Can one company handle all of them?
Yes. EnviCare serves Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisiana statewide, plus North Florida, so multi-state groups can use one provider.
