Mississippi healthcare is spread out. A large share of care happens outside the big metros, in critical access hospitals, rural health clinics, nursing homes and county health offices, alongside the major medical centers in Jackson, Tupelo, Hattiesburg and on the Gulf Coast. EnviCare's own trucks run routes across Mississippi, from the Memphis-area suburbs of DeSoto County to Gulfport and Biloxi, and from the Delta to the Alabama line. Our fleet runs from route trucks to tractor trailers, sized for anything from a rural clinic to a regional hospital, and Mississippi is part of our larger Southeast network.

Mississippi Medical Waste Compliance
Medical waste in Mississippi falls under two state agencies.
Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). MDEQ regulates how infectious medical waste is transported, treated and disposed of. It does so under the general provisions of the Mississippi Solid Waste Law and the Mississippi Nonhazardous Solid Waste Management Regulations. According to MDEQ's medical waste fact sheet:
-
A commercial facility that stores, transfers, treats or processes infectious medical waste needs an MDEQ solid waste permit.
-
Once a transporter collects the waste, it assumes ownership. It must manage the waste in a way that protects public health and deliver it to a properly permitted facility.
-
The generator is still responsible for choosing a legitimate medical waste company and confirming that its waste is handled properly.
-
Manifests aren't required by regulation, but MDEQ recommends that generators get certified manifests from their collector and keep copies on file.
Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH). MSDH licenses healthcare facilities. Its minimum standards for licensed facility types (Title 15, Part 16 of the Mississippi Administrative Code) include a Regulated Medical Waste section, which requires:
-
A written medical waste management plan for every generator of infectious medical waste and medical waste, regardless of volume.
-
Sharps in leak-proof, rigid, puncture-resistant containers, and infectious waste in bags of a distinctive color or bearing the universal symbol for infectious waste.
-
Storage limits: infectious waste (other than sharps in approved containers) may not be stored on site more than seven days above 38°F (6°C), or up to 90 days at or below 32°F (0°C), without MSDH approval.
With EnviCare, the paperwork MDEQ recommends comes standard. Every pickup is recorded on an electronic manifest, and we set pickup frequency to keep you within MSDH storage limits.
Written plans and training inspectors ask for
On top of state rules, inspectors usually ask for four documents first. EnviCare's compliance platform covers all four:
-
HIPAA (45 CFR Parts 160 and 164): an annual risk analysis, documented privacy and security policies, and automated employee training with digitally signed acknowledgements.
-
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens: annual employee training, an updated Exposure Control Plan and employee Hepatitis B documentation.
-
OSHA Hazard Communication: employee training and a written HazCom plan.
-
Biomedical waste plan: state-compliant handling plans, which support the medical waste management plan MSDH requires.
The platform generates updated, site-specific written plans in minutes, tracks employee training and acknowledgements in one dashboard, and includes access to professional "Fine Protection" and mock inspections.
This section is a summary, not legal advice. Confirm your facility's obligations with MDEQ and MSDH.
How Medical Waste Pickup Works
-
Tell us about your facility. What you generate, how much and where. Our Client Care Team will recommend containers and a pickup frequency.
-
Get set up. We deliver RMW boxes or reusable containers, reusable or disposable sharps containers, pharmaceutical and trace-chemo containers, and shredding bins.
-
Get reminders before every pickup. You'll receive a 24-hour email reminder ahead of each service.
-
Pickup and electronic manifest. Our driver collects your sealed containers and records the pickup, giving you a chain-of-custody record you can show an inspector. Tractor trailers handle high-volume sites and large cleanouts.
-
Permitted treatment. Your waste goes to a properly permitted treatment facility, and your records stay available on request.

Mississippi Medical Waste FAQ
Who regulates medical waste in Mississippi? Two agencies share oversight. MDEQ regulates transportation, treatment and disposal under the Mississippi Nonhazardous Solid Waste Management Regulations. MSDH sets handling, storage and management plan requirements for licensed healthcare facilities. OSHA and the U.S. DOT also apply.
Does Mississippi require a medical waste manifest? State rules don't currently require the collector to manifest medical waste, but MDEQ recommends that generators obtain certified manifests and keep them on file. EnviCare provides an electronic manifest for every pickup.
How long can we store infectious waste on site? Under MSDH standards, generally no more than seven days above 38°F, or 90 days at or below 32°F, without MSDH approval (sharps in approved containers are excepted). We'll set your pickup schedule to stay within those limits.
Is your document shredding certified? Yes. EnviCare is NAID AAA certified, and every job comes with a certificate of destruction. We also handle large paper purges and offer secure records storage.
We have facilities in Mississippi and Louisiana. Can one company handle both? Yes. EnviCare trucks run statewide in Mississippi and Louisiana, as well as Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and North Florida. That means one provider and one Client Care Team for every location.
